UK National Threat Level Raised to SEVERE
On 30 April 2026, the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC) raised the UK National Threat Level from SUBSTANTIAL to SEVERE, meaning a terrorist attack is now considered highly likely within the next six months. This is the first time the threat level has stood at SEVERE since November 2021.
Why Has the Threat Level Changed?
The increase follows the antisemitic stabbing attack in Golders Green, North London — but JTAC has made clear that the decision is not based solely on that incident. The broader threat from both Islamist and Extreme Right Wing terrorism has been rising for some time, driven by individuals and small groups based in the UK. The government has also highlighted an increase in state-linked physical threats encouraging acts of violence.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood described the Golders Green attack as “a vile act of terrorism” and confirmed that the government is investing an additional £25 million to protect Jewish communities, bringing total funding to £58 million this year. This includes increased police presence, protective security at synagogues, schools and community centres, and the expansion of Project Servator — deploying specialist officers trained to spot suspicious activity.
What Does SEVERE Mean?
The UK operates a five-tier threat level system, assessed independently by JTAC based on the latest intelligence:
At SEVERE, the public and organisations are urged to be particularly vigilant, report suspicious activity, and review their security arrangements.
What Can Businesses and Homeowners Do?
While the national security response is led by the police and intelligence services, there are practical steps that businesses, organisations and homeowners can take to strengthen their own security posture:
Review your existing security systems — ensure CCTV cameras are functioning correctly, access control systems are up to date, and intruder alarms are regularly tested and maintained.
Consider additional monitoring — remote CCTV monitoring and alarm response services provide an active layer of protection, with trained operators who can respond to incidents in real time.
Assess physical security — gates, barriers and perimeter protection can deter unauthorised access and provide an important first line of defence.
Brief your team — make sure staff are aware of the raised threat level and know how to report suspicious activity to the police via the confidential Anti-Terrorist Hotline on 0800 789 321.
