Importance of Maintaining a CCTV System

The bombing of a Bangkok temple in August 2015 showed how vital CCTV is for giving the police the evidence they need to make progress in an investigation.

However, the full picture was far from ideal. Image quality was poor, and only about 25 per cent of street cameras in downtown Bangkok were working at the time. Had the authorities followed a proper maintenance routine, many more cameras would have been active. As a result, the police could have tracked the attackers far more effectively.

Even so, investigators were able to piece together what actually happened using the limited footage available. They built a description of the prime suspect and created a profile that eventually led to an arrest. Ultimately, this outcome demonstrates a simple truth: even imperfect CCTV footage can be invaluable, but a well-maintained system delivers far better results.

Why Regular Maintenance Matters

A CCTV system that is not regularly maintained will gradually lose effectiveness. For example, cameras can shift position due to wind or vibration. Similarly, lenses collect dirt and moisture over time. In addition, recording equipment can develop faults that go unnoticed until you actually need the footage. By that point, unfortunately, it is too late.

Regular servicing ensures that every camera is pointing where it should be, recording at the right quality, and storing footage correctly. Furthermore, it keeps your system compliant with data protection requirements, which is increasingly important under UK GDPR.

What Does a CCTV Maintenance Visit Include?

At ADP Security, our maintenance contracts typically include several key checks. First, we clean all camera lenses and housings. Next, we verify camera angles and focus. We also test recording and playback quality to ensure footage is usable. Additionally, we check that remote access and monitoring connections are working correctly. Finally, we inspect all cables and power supplies and update firmware where needed.

Beyond the technical checks, we also review your signage to ensure it meets current data protection guidelines. Likewise, we verify that your retention policy is being applied correctly.

Prevention Is Better Than Cure

Like any technology, CCTV works best when it is looked after. A system installed five years ago without a single service visit is unlikely to perform as well as it did on day one. In contrast, a properly maintained system will continue to deliver reliable protection year after year.

If your CCTV system has not been serviced recently, or if you have taken over a building with an existing system, contact ADP Security on 01730 261510. We offer maintenance contracts for systems we have installed. In addition, we can take over the servicing of systems installed by other companies.
