Inventures hires ADP to protect former hospital site
16/11/2004
Inventures, part of NHS Estates, has selected ADP Security Systems to secure a former mental hospital site at Graylingwell, West Sussex. The site is at risk from intruders and wanton vandalism, and it has to be protected for the future. ADP has installed an integrated solution of electronic alarms and sensors, impenetrable window grilles and toughened doors, anti-climb paint and associated locks and door braces, all within a very tight timescale. ADP was selected following a competitive tender process involving four companies as it provided the best solution for the price.
Inventures’ project manager said: “This was an awkward site, and there was the question of liaising with other contractors, which ADP did very well. Also, their procedures for reporting and problem solving were very good, and I always knew what was going on.”
The site was not served by electricity or telephone lines, so ADP had to find a solution from a range of equipment including solar panels to design a freestanding alarm system, which could continue operating without intervention for long periods.
The buildings to be secured included a chapel, horticultural buildings, a farmyard, two substantial country houses and a large fuel tank housing. Ivy had covered numerous buildings and the nearby landscape was equally overgrown so ADP advised on a sensitive degree of grounds maintenance to improve visibility around the premises whilst retaining premises security.
Graylingwell is a beautiful site, close to Chichester, with an interesting history, having been the site for a leper colony in the 1300s. More recently it was a mental hospital complete with water tower. In the 1800s and 1900’s many specimen trees and shrubs donated from the Batsford Estate were planted over the parkland site. Some of these trees are now 80 to 100 feet high healthy plants. The hospital activity ceased in the mid-nineties and the buildings, dating from the 1800s, are no longer in use.
